A man hurled a wooden plank at police officers and then proceeded to expose himself to them in Piccadilly Gardens.
On August 3, 35-year-old Thomas Ward had been drunk when he joined a riot in the city center, as revealed in Manchester Magistrates Court on August 12. During the proceedings, Ward pleaded guilty to charges of violent disorder and exposure, which the Judge described as a 'shameful' episode.
The court heard that Ward was part of a mob and was seen throwing a plank of wood at police officers. Additionally, he was involved in a group assault where he kicked a man. Prosecutor Tess Kenyon noted that he attempted to conceal his identity with his t-shirt but intentionally exposed himself at one point, an act deemed meant to cause serious offense. One female officer reported feeling specifically targeted during the incident, and Ward was identified through distinctive tattoos and a black ankle tag.
In his defense, attorney Samantha Smith explained that after consuming a few drinks, he found himself caught up in the protest and chose to engage, which he now acknowledges was a mistake.
District Judge Joanne Hirst, who remanded Ward into custody, described the incident as shameful. Ward, who resides on Colliery Street in Bradford, is scheduled to appear at Manchester Crown Court for sentencing on August 19.
